Is Spring a Good Time to Prune Trees in Minnesota?
Is spring a good time to prune trees in Minnesota?
Short answer:
Yes — spring is a great time to prune most trees in Minnesota.
Why Spring Actually Works Well
Once trees leaf out, you can see what’s going on.
It becomes obvious:
-
Which branches are dead (no leaves)
-
What’s overcrowded
-
What’s rubbing or growing the wrong direction
That makes it easier to make clean, intentional cuts instead of guessing in the winter.
This is when a lot of structural and cleanup pruning gets done.
What We’re Pruning Right Now
In May around the Twin Cities, we’re typically working on:
-
Maples
-
Honeylocust
-
Ash
-
Most yard trees that are overgrown or hitting the house
Spring is a great time to:
-
Get branches off the roof
-
Open up sunlight
-
Clean out deadwood
-
Shape trees before summer growth takes off
Shrubs Are a Little Different
Shrubs follow their own rules depending on when they bloom.
A big one people ask about here is lilacs:
-
Lilacs should be pruned right after they finish blooming
-
If you wait too long, you cut off next year’s flowers
That’s because they set next year’s buds shortly after blooming
So:
⭐️Enjoy the blooms
⭐️Then prune shortly after they fade (usually early summer in Minnesota)
The One Big Exception: Oak Trees
Oak trees are the main thing we’re careful with.
In Minnesota, pruning oaks in spring/early summer can spread oak wilt.
So:
-
Most trees = good to prune now
-
Oaks = we usually hold off unless necessary
We follow guidance from the University of Minnesota Extension, and it matches what we see in the field.
Bottom Line
Spring (and Summer) is one of the most practical times to prune trees in Minnesota — especially once you can see how everything is growing.
Just treat each tree (and shrub) a little differently:
-
Most trees → good to go
-
Shrubs → depends on bloom timing
-
Oaks → wait
